Maxim: Capitalism and Socialism are compatible. Capitalists are compatible with neither.
Purpose: Rebut neo-liberal and libertarian tropes re anti-regulation, small government, Adam Smith’s ‘invisible hand,’ etc. It’s attention catching because the first sentence is contrary to popular notions. The second sentence is even more contrarian. Meant to educate regarding democratic socialism and social democrats.
Substitutes/Alternatives: Capitalism and Socialism are not enemies. Capitalists are the enemy of both.
Explanation: Socialism helps fund education, public research, and helps startups and entrepreneurial opportunity, all of which helps make a robust free market. Capitalists may benefit from a free market system and social spending but inevitably evolve to crushing competition, avoiding taxes, and behavior that is intended to preserve their own wealth and power at the expense of free markets and equality of opportunity.
